- Flat Racing/Chase: A straightforward race on a level track, with no obstacles for the horses to jump.
- Jump Racing/Hurdle (also known as National Hunt Racing in the UK and Ireland): Races that involve horses jumping over obstacles, such as hurdles or fences.
- Hurdle Racing: A specific type of jump race where horses clear hurdles, which are smaller than fences (minimum of three-and-a-half-feet high). These races must have at least eight hurdles and cover a minimum distance of two miles (3 km).
- Bumper Racing: A flat race conducted under Jump racing rules. Its purpose is to allow horses that haven't raced on the Flat to gain competitive experience.
- Steeplechase: Horses jump larger fences over longer distances.
- Handicap Racing: A race designed to equalise the chances of all participating horses by allocating a specific weight to each one based on its assessed ability. Handicaps are run on both flat and jump courses.
